Blaupunkt Phoenix & 2000 SL1

Discussion in 'Saturn S-series' started by Dean S. Lautermilch©²ºº³, May 30, 2004.

  1. Today I went to dealer in Fort Lauderdale for a new radio. My 2000 SL1 is
about to hit 100K without any problems and I plan to keep it for a while. I
wanted to get a stereo that can play MP3s and after looking at the
selection, I chose a Blaupunkt Phoenix. The radio and installation were
under $200. I paid for it, picked it up, and moved the car to the install
    area.
The manager of the install area told me it would not fit after the install
had begun. He said two of the knobs would interfere. He offered me a Kenwood
    instead.
I refused and he was surprised. He then told me that the Kenwood was a
better radio than the Blaupunkt. I held my ground as I have had cars with
Blaupunkts in them and been happy.
The one that I had selected had all the features I wanted and my decision
had to be respected. So I got a refund to his surprise. I can't say it was
'bait and switch' but it was clear to me that the person was expecting me to
    take the other stereo.
So does anyone have a Blaupunkt Phoenix in a 1999-2003 SL1? Or can anyone
say that it will not fit in a 2000 SL?
In his defense, the install manager might have been giving me a better
radio. But after living in south Florida since the late 80s, I am used to
people trying to alter a deal once money has been exchanged. I've been
burned a few times so I back out if someone cannot live up to promises that
were made. When the salesman looked up the install kit for my model, it was
there. I would like to know the truth of the matter.

Typically, I would say go to Crutchfield.com, but I checked and don't
see that model of receiver there. You might check anyway and see if
there is something from the same mfg that you're interested in:

What a line of BS - get another installer.

I bought a 2000 SL1 in Apr and a Phoenix a few weeks later and
installed it myself - it was really easy and fits fine - no problems
    at all.

I bought the player from Crutchfields on a special for $146 with a
complete installation kit that included a replacement mounting
assembly that slid right in to place of the OEM CD player. They also
send complete detailed illustrated instructions on how to take out the
dash, the existing unit and put in the new one.

The hardest part of the whole deal was that in the beginning, as I was
soldering the wires from the harness adapter to the wires coming from
the unit, I wasn't quite sure which of the three red main power wires
I had to use since one was marked for L1 and another was marked for an
S1 or something like that, but I figured it out once I double checked
things. After that, it went right in the car per the Crutchfield's
supplied installation instructions - the same unit (or equivalent)
from BumBuy (AKA Best Buy) priced out at near $200 or more with the
same necessary adapter parts...and of course they only wanted a
    nominal fee to install it...

I took my own sweet time doing things so it was maybe a two hour
solder things together job (about an hour of that being wandering the
net for info on the wires and definition of what Saturn I had). Then
it took maybe an hour removing the OEM CD and putting in the Phoenix.

Been luv'in it ever since. Even conquered the display setup to get it
    the way I wanted it.

Is it better to Snipe or be Sniped ?
