Door handles and windows giving resistance

    I have a 1996 SW1, 150K.

The last 2 years or so, the front windows are giving more and more
resistance (i.e., they're harder to crank), and there seems to be more play
in the door crank handles--almost a quarter revolution before the window
starts moving. The rear door windows operate acceptably, but the outside
rear door handles need quite a tug before the doors will open.

What's the best course of action? WD40? Grease? And where are the key
moving parts responsible for the sluggishness? Do the inside door panels
need to come off? I imagine they would, at least for the window issue.
